and the wall came tumbling down...

Had a bit of a setback on site today ... one of the block walls buckled and had to be taken down.

Below is the report from the builder re: the damage.

Arrived back at site in the afternoon and found that the newly laid blockwork on the southern side had cracked and was leaning over. Upon investigation, it was found the solid stone wall on the rear southern side had collapsed, pressing against the block wall, causing it to fail and crack. The wall at this stage was still unfilled with concrete, as the severe wet weather over the last 7 days had made the site unworkable.

To repair the damage, the wall was pulled down and the steel reinforcement removed. A large number (approx 80) blocks were broken and not suitable for re-use. The remaining blocks were carefully removed and cleaned of the old mortar.

It appears that the rock face had cracked open, and slid down onto the wall. Probably due to the heavy rain soaking a clay seam that was between the large rocks. This clay expanded, and the force exerted caused the rock to break and fall.
